Your Storefront Is Open All Night. Is Anyone Working It?

A digital storefront has one quality a physical one can never match: it never closes. A visitor can walk into your showroom at three in the morning from the other side of the planet.

Most of them walk into an empty room.

The gap nobody budgets for

Open a shop on a high street and staffing it is the obvious cost. Open a walkable space, a marketplace listing or a showroom you can step into and the staffing question quietly disappears, because the room appears to run itself.

It does not. It renders itself. There is a difference, and the visitor finds it the moment they have a question — about price, provenance, terms, sizing, what happens after they buy. In a physical shop they ask someone. In an unstaffed digital one they leave.

That is a harder failure than a phone ringing out. A missed call is an absence. A room full of things to look at with nobody to ask is a presence that disappoints.

The wave arriving to fill it

The same technology being pointed at phone lines right now is the answer, and the direction of travel is not subtle.

Gartner expects task-specific AI agents to reach 40% of enterprise applications by the end of 2026, up from under 5% in 2025 — an eightfold move in roughly eighteen months. Looking further out, it forecasts that agentic AI will autonomously resolve 80% of common customer service issues by 2029, cutting operating costs 30%. A February 2026 survey found 91% of service leaders under executive pressure to deploy AI this year.

What the savings actually look like

Forecasts are generous. Measurements are more useful.

In Generative AI at Work, Brynjolfsson, Li and Raymond followed 5,179 customer support agents given an AI assistant. Issues resolved per hour rose 14% on average — and 34% for novice and lower-skilled staff, with almost no effect on the experienced ones.

That distribution is the whole lesson. The value lands where the work is repetitive and the person is inexperienced or absent. An unattended storefront at 2am is the purest version of that condition.

One caution on the arithmetic: Gartner projects that by 2030 the cost per resolution for generative AI will exceed what many offshore human agents cost, as compute prices climb and vendors stop subsidising growth. Today's price is not a permanent price.

Most of these will fail, and predictably

Gartner also expects over 40% of agentic AI projects to be cancelled by the end of 2027, blaming escalating costs, unclear business value and weak risk controls.

The failures share a shape. The assistant is asked to be everything instead of something. Nobody defines what happens when it does not know. It is fed a generic script rather than the actual terms of the actual property, so it is confidently wrong about the one thing that mattered.

A storefront assistant with a narrow brief — greet, answer the repeatable twenty questions, qualify, hand a real buyer to a real person — is a different product from a chatbot bolted to a landing page, even though they demo identically.

Then measure it from the first day. A 14% lift is real and completely invisible unless somebody was counting arrivals, questions and handoffs beforehand. Most owners of digital property have never instrumented the room they already own, which is why they cannot tell a quiet month from a broken one.

The unglamorous version wins

Digital property is bought on the promise of always-on. Always-on is a staffing claim, and until recently nobody could honestly make it. Now it can be made, cheaply, by anyone willing to write down what the assistant is for and where it stops.

Our development studio, Smith App Studio, builds exactly this for practices, firms and shops — a 24/7 AI receptionist, site chat with one shared inbox, and an assistant trained on your own documents. You can talk to a live one on their services page, and their companion piece, The Front Desk That Answers at 2am, works the same evidence from the operator's side.

The room is already open. The only question left is whether anyone is in it.
